Authorities rescue injured hiker on Mount Yonah

Authorities rescued an injured female hiker on the top of Mount Yonah on Tuesday, Aug. 13. White County firefighters, EMS and the Lee Arrendale Correctional Institute Fire Brigade responded to the report of the injured hiker around 3 p.m., according to a statement from White County Public Safety.

Tuesday night storm damages two houses

A tree falling on a house and a separate residential fire are being attributed to a late evening storm on Tuesday, Aug. 13. White County firefighters responded to a report of a tree falling on a home on Independent Drive in southern White County around 10:30 p.m.

Scam targeting Habersham EMC members

Habersham EMC is warning customers about a scam. The electric company said in a press release that customers are receiving phone calls stating their power is going to be disconnected unless they make a payment over the phone or all a number that is provided.

An evening to support the arts in Helen – and a chance to take home a variety of original artwork – is a week away. The Art Off the Wall fundraiser dinner for the Helen Arts & Heritage Center, will be held at Helen’s Holiday Inn Express & Suites Conference Center on Friday, Aug. 16.

Helen, county formally approve millage rates

The City of Helen was the only entity to approve rolling back their millage rate for fiscal year 2019-2020 on Thursday, July 18. The commissioners approved the rollback rate of 5.768 from 6.118, which was a decrease of about 5.7 percent.

Cleveland picks design firm for water treatment plant update

The City of Cleveland has chosen a design firm to upgrade the city’s wastewater treatment plant. City administrator Tom O’Bryant recommended the City Council use Rindt-McDuff Associates of Gainesville, the city’s current engineer, during the city’s meeting on Monday, Aug. 5.
