White County has first confirmed rabies case of 2019

A recent incident on Paradise Valley Road is White County’s first confirmed case of rabies in 2019. On Saturday, Aug. 10, homeowners alerted by barking outside found a skunk chasing their dog in its kennel, according to White County Environmental Health Manager Sean Sullivan.

Celebrating in the streets

The 50th anniversary celebration of Alpine Helen will continue with a street dance this month. The event will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, in the marketplatz in downtown Helen, said Jerry Brown, executive director of Alpine Helen/White County Georgia Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Four arrested for fight, one person injured

A fight on Saturday, Aug. 10, led to one person being injured and four arrests. Brooke Alyssa Phillips, 20, Demorest; Kenneth Sterling-McKenzie Tatum, 18, Demorest; Rebecca Lynn Tyler, 39, Demorest; and Amy Ann York, 32, Cleveland, were all charged with affray (fighting).

Jury acquits Pate of murder

A Cleveland man has been acquitted on murder charges from a 2018 shooting death. A jury in White County Superior Court returned not guilty verdicts on malice murder and felony murder charges against 62-year-old Ronnie Pate on Friday, Aug. 2, following a weeklong trial.
