Richland man accused of rape

Helen police have arrested a Richland man accused of rape. Police Chief Brian Stephens said that the incident is alleged to have occurred at a local motel late the night of Tuesday, July 23.

Historic preservation committee shapes proposal

The White County Historical Overlay Committee continues to gather input, but its potential recommendations are beginning to take shape. The committee met again Thursday, July 25, to share what members believe should be key components of rules governing historical preservation.

Schools unveil new program following loss of 21st Century

After losing grant funding for its 21st Century program, White County Schools will still offer after-school tutoring this year on a reduced scale. Student Accountability Director Jennifer King says the school system will offer academic tutoring in conjunction with school homework centers.

Next step for bypass

A road widening project for the Cleveland Bypass (Appalachian Parkway) has a contractor, and it could soon have a start date for construction. The Georgia Department of Transportation announced earlier this week that the project bid had been awarded to CMES Inc. of Norcross.

Cleveland adopts millage, mayor objects

On paper, the Cleveland City Council unanimously approved a 2019-2020 millage rate, but not everyone at the dais was in favor. Despite the council’s vote to set the millage rate at 6, about 1.7 percent over the rollback rate of 5.899, Mayor Shan Ash declined to sign the formal resolution.

Pedestrian hit by vehicle late Tuesday night in Cleveland

A Cleveland man is in the hospital after being hit on Bryant Street by a vehicle late Tuesday evening, July 30. Kenneth Anderson, 32, was walking on the street, just inside of the outer white line marking, according to Lt. Donna Sims with the Cleveland Police Department.

Two bodies found at campground after welfare check

Two bodies were found at Mt. Yonah Campground on Monday, July 29, around 3:45 p.m. Authorities received a call to conduct the welfare check on an “older couple” that lived in a camper, because they had not been seen for several days, according to White County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Rick Kelley.

Back to School Clothes Day will be July 27

Caring Hands Ministry will hold a Back to School Clothes Day on Saturday, July 27. The giveaway event will be held at 6483 Cleveland Highway (beside Papa’s Pizza) in Clermont from 3-6 p.m. Please bring bags for the clothes. If you have some to share, bring them too.
