Pets of the week for the week of July 15 from White County Animal Control and Charles Smithgall Humane Society. Raven is a two-year-old handsome, fluffy and sweet boy looking for his for forever home. Lady is a six-month-old Lab mix. She is sweet, but shy girl who loves to snuggle.

SUMMER WORK PICKS UP FOR WCHS TEAM

Last winter, the White County Lady Warriors put together the most successful season in the history of the school's volleyball program. The WCHS squad put together a 20-12 run during the 2018 campaign, finishing third in the 7-AAAA tournament and earning a spot in the Class AAAA state tournament.

CITY OF CLEVELAND SETS REFERENDUM ON EARLIER SUNDAY SALES OF ALCOHOL

Last year it was Helen, and this year it’s time for Cleveland residents to decide whether alcoholic beverages can be served earlier on Sundays, as allowed by state law passed last year. At a meeting earlier this month, the Cleveland City Council approved putting the item on a Nov.

HELEN LOOKS AT ROLLING BACK MILLAGE RATE

The Helen City Commission is expected to vote on rolling back the city millage rate this month. The commission is proposing a rollback of the millage rate to 5.768 from 6.118 – a decrease of about 5.7 percent – for the new fiscal year.

Ministry strives to give kids beds

A group of local residents are working to ensure that no kid is left without a bed. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a ministry that started in 2012 in Idaho, and makes handmade bunk beds for children who do not have their own bed.

Helen approves increase to water and sewer rates

Starting July 1, the water and sewer base rates for City of Helen customers will increase by 50 cents each to help keep up with costs. The Helen City Commissioners approved the increases during a called meeting on Tuesday, June 25.

Following a second public hearing on Monday, June 17, the White County Board of Commissioners voted 5-0 to adopt a budget for fiscal year 2020. It includes general-fund expenditures of $19,190,827, plus various separate funds comprising almost $5 million, for a total of $24,123, 352.
