WCHS cross country teams running toward the start of the 2021 season

With the weather warming up, it means it's almost time for the start of the high school cross country season. The White County High School runners have been putting in some mileage this summer, getting ready for the start of the new season.

Repairs to Ridge Road in Helen has been delayed slightly due to recent rain. Helen City Manager Jerry Elkins said that they hope to get the bank stabilized within the next 10 days, as long as the weather cooperates. Following that, a curb will be installed and the street repaved.

Grand Jury indicts 38 defendants

The White County Grand Jury returned 33 true bills indictments, and one no bill, when they met on July 12. There were 38 individuals indicted, among them a Cleveland man accused of involuntary manslaughter following the death of a Mableton resident.

The city of Helen plans to study possibly increasing base pay for its police officers to aid in recruitment and retention. Commissioner Steve Fowler broached the issue at the city’s July 20 meeting. He said the police department is short-staffed and wanted to look at solutions.

WCMS Warriors prep for season

It's been a busy summer for the members of the White County Middle School football team as the Warriors prepare for the upcoming season. WCMS will field two teams again this fall, competing in the seventh and eighth grade divisions of the Mountain Athletic Conference.

One charged in July 14 wreck

A driver has been charged after his vehicle hit an Exxon gas station sign on July 14. According to Georgia State Patrol, James Mack Garrett, 46, of Cleveland, was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer northbound on U.S. 129 just south of Underwood Farm Road, when the vehicle went off the road to the right.
