Pets of the week for the week of Aug. 5 from White County Animal Control. Odie is a fixed 3-year-old male Lab mix who was returned to our shelter because his family was moving and couldn't take him. Odie is a sweet, laid back boy who loves everyone and enjoys taking walks and hanging out.

Warriors attend Falcons' practice session

A group of White County High School football players got a chance last weekend to get a close look at the Atlanta Falcons. The WCHS players were special guests of the Falcons during a practice session July 27 at the team's headquarters in Flowery Branch.

WCHS runners wrap up summer program

It's been a hot summer, but the high temperatures and humidity hasn't kept the White County High School cross country runners from putting in some work. The Warrior runners have been pounding the pavement since June, preparing for the 2019 season.

School board sets millage rate

The White County Board of Education approved keeping the current millage rate of 17.481 for 2019, following a third and final public hearing on Tuesday, July 30. The current rate is a 2.03 percent increase over the rollback rate of 17.133.

Historic preservation committee shapes proposal

The White County Historical Overlay Committee continues to gather input, but its potential recommendations are beginning to take shape. The committee met again Thursday, July 25, to share what members believe should be key components of rules governing historical preservation.

Schools unveil new program following loss of 21st Century

After losing grant funding for its 21st Century program, White County Schools will still offer after-school tutoring this year on a reduced scale. Student Accountability Director Jennifer King says the school system will offer academic tutoring in conjunction with school homework centers.

Next step for bypass

A road widening project for the Cleveland Bypass (Appalachian Parkway) has a contractor, and it could soon have a start date for construction. The Georgia Department of Transportation announced earlier this week that the project bid had been awarded to CMES Inc. of Norcross.
