The unemployment rate in White County rose in November, but remains at a prepandemic level. The Georgia Department of Labor reported the county’s preliminary rate at 2.8% for the month, up from an adjusted 2.3% in October, which was the lowest it has been this year.

Authorities are searching for information in regards to a burglary on Dec. 28 at Antioch Baptist Church at 390 Antioch Cemetery Road. According to White County Sheriff’s Office Captain Clay Hammond, at approximately 5:30 p.m. authorities responded to the church in regards to the burglary.

A rabid skunk in the Hunt Road area is the 19th confirmed rabies case in White County for 2020. According to White County Environmental Health Manager Sean Sullivan, on Thursday, Dec. 17, a homeowner discovered a skunk chasing his dog in its pen at approximately 9:30 p.m.

White County plane crash under FAA investigation

The FAA is investigating a plane crash that happened in the Black Road area of White County on Sunday, Dec. 27. Two people were aboard the small Piper aircraft that went down into trees northeast of a nearby airstrip, said David Murphy, county public safety director, on Monday.

This is the last week to early vote in the runoff elections before Election Day next week.  Runoffs include a pair of U.S. Senate races between Republican Kelly Loeffler and Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican David Perdue and Democrat Jon Ossoff.

December has set a new high for confirmed COVID-19 cases in White County as the rate of new infections continues to rise. The county has had 450 cases so far this month, according to a Dec. 22 report from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Cleveland residents arrested as part of drug bust

Four Cleveland residents were among the suspects arrested following a year-long, multi-county investigation of alleged drug trafficking. The Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office (ARDEO) announced on Dec. 9 that the arrests made throughout North Georgia.
