The Cleveland City Council identified additional streets for potential paving with potential help from state funding. Council members approved the city’s application Jan. 11 for the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Local Maintenance Improvement Grant  (LMIG).

White County ended 2020 with 685 confirmed COVID-19 cases in December, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Jan. 5 status report. The previous monthly high had been 363 cases in September. There were 2,025 total confirmed coronavirus cases reported in White County during 2020.

A man was injured after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at Freedom Park on Wednesday, Jan. 6. According to Cleveland Police Department Lt. Donna Sims, at 3:35 p.m., officers were dispatched to the park in reference to a male who had been shot in the leg.
The White County Health Department was flooded with appointment requests following an announcement late last week that Georgia would expand its list of people eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

A veteran Cleveland police officer has been named interim police chief while the search for a new department head continues. The Cleveland City Council approved placing Maj. Aaron Weiland in the interim role at a Jan. 4 meeting. Weiland has been with the Cleveland Police Department for 22 years.

Election Day is on the horizon for Georgia’s two U.S. Senate and state Public Service Commission runoffs. The advance in-person voting period was set to wrap up at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31. White County Chief Voter Registrar Lisa Manning said early voting has gone well.

December has set a new high for confirmed COVID-19 cases in White County as the rate of new infections continues to rise. The county has had 450 cases so far this month, according to a Dec. 22 report from the Georgia Department of Public Health.
